I would also agree that local galleries are a great source, even if they can be a bit intimidating. I would Google galleries in my city and browse online to see what they have before going there in person. It helps knowing you will like what they sell before awkwardly walking around and walking out. They are usually happy to have people browse and talk, and they understand that not everybody can afford what they sell right away and that galleries can be inspirational as well. Galleries will allow buying art in the limited number of instalments, at least the ones in my city, and that has helped me buy some pretty expensive art more affordably. I still spent the money but being able to take something home right away and pay for it over 3-5 months made me buy it rather than wait to save the money as that requires bigger commitment. Also, if I found the artist I like in the gallery, I would Google them as they often have a set number of pieces that they sell themselves through their websites, for a bit less than the gallery would sell the same pieces (no gallery fees), and i had been able to buy from artists directly in instalments as well.
Magnum Photo has an annual event (closer to Christmas) where they sell 100s of photos for $100. They are up to 6″x6″ in size, so smaller, but it’s an opportunity to buy great photos affordably. And they look great framed with large frames/matts. I got two Steve McCurry photos that way I might not be able to buy otherwise that easily.
