I didn’t want to admit it and in his pain, my ex loved to proclaim to people that I broke it off because of the book (making me seem silly and weak), but the truth is that the desire to end things already existed. Her ability to own her story gave me permission to own mine and be honest about what was in my heart. It gave me permission to elevate my own vision of myself and my life over someone else’s. It taught me that sacrificing and suppressing what’s really in my heart doesn’t end in happily ever after. Not getting married was absolutely the best decision I ever made, and I’ll forever be grateful for the role that book played in my life. Now I reject any suggestions that the book, and the movement it inspired, are a cliche. The book struck a chord because it gave women permission to own and honor their messy stories. I continue to follow Elizabeth Gilbert to this day and she remains a beacon of living life on her own terms, unapologetically. Thank you for doing something similar here and being willing to honor your own messy story. The chapter you’re in now appears to be pretty beautiful from here 🙂
